National Veterans Creative Arts Festival
Nationwide, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment to help veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. Across the country each year, veterans treated at VA facilities compete in a local creative arts competition. The competition includes 53 categories in the visual arts division that range from oil painting to leatherwork to
paint-by-number kits. In addition, there are 120 categories in the performing arts pertaining to all aspects of music, dance, drama and creative writing. A national selection committee chooses first, second and third place
winners among all of the entries. Select winners are invited to attend the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival each year. The veterans invited to participate in the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival re selected winners from the 2013 national competition. Learn More
Purpose of the Competition and Festival The key purpose of the National Veterans Creative Arts competition and festival is to recognize veterans for their creative accomplishments and to educate and demonstrate to communities throughout the country the therapeutic benefits of the arts.
Local and National Competitions
For information regarding entering the competition, please contact recreation/creative arts therapy staff at the VA facility in which you are enrolled. If you need assistance in identifying a VA staff person from your facility, please contact Amy Kimbler at (320) 255-6486 or Elizabeth Mackey,
national director at (320) 255-6351.
Auxiliary Involvement
Since 2000, the Auxiliary has played a key role in NVCAF as a cosponsor of the event, along with Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to raising funds, Auxiliary departments also provide volunteers who assist with everything from punching meal tickets to stuffing programs to ironing costumes for the stage show. Best of all, Auxiliary members have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the veterans who participate.

Juniors, The Next Generation
Engaging the next generation to become members in the American Legion Auxiliary is the important purpose of the Junior Activities program. Junior membership is open to girls from birth through age 17. The Junior Activities program prepares girls under the age of 18 to become active adult members of the organization by providing positive volunteer experiences that instill the ideals of the Auxiliary. These girls develop leadership skills while having fun and hopefully becoming the future leaders of our organization.
Juniors are members of the Auxiliary who are organized as a committee of a unit. Juniors are not a separate Auxiliary organization. Junior members conduct their own meetings and perform their own special activities. Junior members plan their own community service projects, along with supporting projects sponsored by the Auxiliary and The American Legion Family.
Connecting with our Junior members and involving them in worthwhile activities that support our mission are the best ways to ensure the continuation of the Auxiliary for as long as there are veterans to serve.

Have you heard the exciting news? After over 50 years, the Washington American
Legion family has a candidate for the high position of National President of
the American Legion Auxiliary. During
the Auxiliary 2016-17 administration, our own PDP Mary Davis will bring honor to us all when
she steps up to serve our great organization as its National President.
As we have come to
realize, the challenges of making the dream of a National President from the
Department of Washington a reality are many and varied. This endeavor will be costly and requires
support from throughout our Department.
We are writing to you today to invite you to join us and be a part of our
“Washington Team ‘17”Campaign.
All Posts, Units and
Squadrons are being invited to be a part of this historical event by supporting
Mary’s candidacy. This is no small task,
as we need to raise between $60,000.00 and $80,000.00 over the next couple of
years. It is our hope that Districts,
Units, Posts, Squadrons and other groups will host fund raising events to help
us achieve that goal.
We will be sharing
information about the varied events being held and provide ideas that may help
you develop your own local fund raisers. Be sure and check frequently on the activities
associated with this campaign at “MaryDavis” on https://www.facebook.com/
and on our blog at http://aladaviscampaign.blogspot.com/
.
Please provide
information about your planned events with Campaign Chairman Carol Prentice and
she will coordinate Candidate Mary’s attendance. If Mary is not able to attend, then members
of the Executive Steering Committee may be able to join you.
The support of all
members of the Department of Washington Legion Family is essential for “Washington Team ‘17” to
be a success. We hope you will agree to
be part of our team.
Please return the below
information to Carol Prentice, 435 W 1st St., Cheney, WA 99004-1475.

Good News to Share
The American Legion Auxiliary has good news to share. We know that what our members do makes a difference in the lives of veterans, military and their families, so we make sure that the public knows about it. Whether it is welcoming troops home from the battlefield or visiting wounded warriors at VA Medical Centers, we hope that our example will move the hearts of more Americans so that they, in turn, will offer their support to our servicemembers.
